Water TDS and Effect of TDS on Health @healthcocktail07
Disclaimer - This blog is for the general public.
Previously in the past Era, we have some written parameters in the ayurvedic text for drinking water but no instrument, Aacharya perform some Prikshan (परीक्षण) and after Parikhhsa, they will use that water. even they have categorized river and their flow i.e. toward east facing or toward west-facing.
West-facing river water is considered light & healthy for the body, In comparison to East-facing rivers.
they use terms like laghu ( light) or guru ( heavy)
( Ref ayurveda ) for more one can go through Ayurved Samhita Aasthang hrudyam (अष्टांग हृदयम).
With the passage of time new scientific inventions did. as science grows new techniques develop
new parameters come to the knowledge and make it safer for human use.
one of the major threats from water pollution came to knowledge i.e, water born diseases- cholera & hepatitis. various agency work on water sanitization and supply.
To Be Covered.
When/ Why / How R/O ( Reverse Osmosis) started.
What's the bad impact on us if High TDS.
Level of TDS for Drinking water purposes.
How to Measure TDS.
R.O. used at Home.
Water Quality Indicators.
TDS Of Packed Drinking Water.
What is TDS (Total Dissolve Solid)
Those particulates (कण) are present in water after an average filtration i.e. size of about 2 microns is called TDS.
Micron (एक मिलीमीटर का एक हजारवाँ भाग) one-thousandth of a millimeter
TDS tells about solid components in water, basically organic and inorganic salt. TDS is measured in PPM (Part per million) or mg/L. 1 ppm is equal to 0.0001in percentage.
A high TDS doesn't have a specific indicator for water pollution. Different water sources have different TDS levels Like rivers, lakes, sea, and running water, each type of water has particular salt composition. So Basically TDS is not a pollutant indicator.
The salt (organic/inorganic) present in water makes it Hard and Soft in nature. so-called hard water and soft water. The quantity below 120 mg/l is soft & above 180 mg/l is hard water.
TDS standard is India set by BIS INDIA (Bureau of Indian Standards).
TDS LEVEL ( Range of TDS - 0 - 2000 ).
- <50 - having no minerals
- 50-150 Accepted for drinking.
- 150-250 Good for Cardiovascular Disease Patients
- 250-350 --- do --
- 350-500 Fair Accepted for drinking
- 500-900 Less accepted
- 900-1200 Avoidable
- 1200-2000 Unacceptable
- Above 2000. Unacceptable
As per BIS TDS level - 500 ppm (upper limit) for drinking water.
As per WHO TDS level - is 300 ppm for drinking water.
DIFFERENT R/O FOR TDS .(अलग टीडीएस के लिए अलग आरओ)
0-200 use UV Water purifier
200- 300 use R/O + UV water purifier
300-5000 use R/O + UF + UV water purifier
This all has different mechanisms of work. simple to complex.
Method for water purification -
- Boiling (Oldest)
- Disinfectant ( Commonly used bleaching powder)
- filtration (Use membrane)
Type of R.O. (filter/membrane use)
- TFC (Thin film composite)
- CTA (Cellulose Tri-Acetate)
TFC is considered superior to CTA.
At home, we use These 2 types of R.O.
Both are different - in filtration abilities and chlorine tolerance.
Kent R.O. is the first company in India to introduce Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) India.
The owner is Dr. Mahesh Gupta.
METER USED FOR TDS
EC (Electrical conductivity) most commonly used meter
Water Quality Indicator In India as per CPCB-
As per CPCB water is categorized into A to E and below E.
Various Parameters for water categorization.
- BOD
- Total coliform organism MPN/100 ml
- Water PH 6.5- 8.5
- Dissolved Oxygen
Total coliform organism- a coliform is a group of organisms that present in the human digestive tract most commonly E COLI
MPN mean - Number of coliforms organism present per unit volume. Organisms present in per unit sample.
MEL MPN- is a portable kit for E. Coli tests.
MPN test has a variable range from low risk to high risk.
Category A- drinking purpose after disinfectant
Category B- Bathing
category C- Drinking purpose after conventional treatment and disinfectant
Category D- Wildlife & Fishery
Category E- Irrigation
BOD - biological oxygen demand means more polluted water with dissolved organic material.
Only TDS doesn't indicate water pollution it indicates whether this water is for drinking purposes or not.
we can alter TDS by using various methods one is R.O. For water pollution, we have some other indicators.
Water has 88.89 % of oxygen in dissolved form.
In India New Delhi NGT Ban R.O. Use.
Effect on Health Of High TDS -
High TDS may doesn't impact your health directly. It depends upon which mineral and substance are present in water at that time. this salt alters water's taste level leading to bitter and brackish
this higher concentration of salt leads to the staining and decaying of teeth and may lead to the formation of stones in the body and may lead to renal failure and deposition of heavy metals in organs leading to Biomagnification.
Biomagnification बायोमैग्निफिकेशन Is a process in which the Accumulation of chemicals into body tissue leads to an increase in their concentration greater than exposure.
TDS Of Packed Water -
As per google source and blog searches tds of different water.
- BISLERI - 116 mg/L
- RAIL NEER - 114 mg/L
- Aquafina - 50 mg /L
- Kingfisher - 50 mg/L
- Kinely -- 50 mg/L
